Mother’s Day is fast approaching.
While some people think its another hallmark invention crafted to sell more cards and gifts, it is lovely to stop and have a day all about thanking your mum for all that she does and for all that she is.
When I was little I remember waking up early on Mother’s Day with my sister and making breakfast in bed for my mum. It felt like we had cooked for hours. I was on scrambled egg duty. My sister was head chef. We laid out a pot of tea, cup and saucer, sugar, milk and a plate with buttered toast and scrambled eggs.
I ran into the garden at the last second and cut the best flowers to put in a little jar.
We served up our cold, over cooked breakfast and watched our mum eat each bite, begging for praise.
Another year I entered a raffle competition at school for Mother’s Day and won. I couldn’t believe my luck. That year my mum was the most spoilt mum in town. No lavender scented drawer liners here, she got the whole kit and caboodle. The next year I wasn’t so lucky and my handmade gift tried hard to compensate.
Mother’s Day really is a special day.
